Other treatment options

The PCIU does not only offer cochlear implants. Our team is trained to deliver treatment options for all varieties of hearing loss, from conventional hearing aids to other implantable hearing devices.

Conductive and Mixed hearing loss

Surgery of the middle ear might not always achieve satisfactory improvements in hearing levels due to anatomical, pathological or physiological circumstances. Continuous conductive hearing loss often restricts the success of the fitting of prescribed hearing aids after surgery.

Middle ear pathology that causes slight to moderate hearing impairment are most often best treated by stimulating the inner ear directly. In these cases, treatment with implantable hearing devices might be considered. Examples of middle ear pathology that can be successfully treated with middle ear implants are:

  • Cholesteatoma
  • Chronic middle ear inflammation
  • Damage to the ossicular chain
  • Atresia
  • Microtia
  • Other syndromes

Different implantable hearing device options are available in South Africa, such as:

  • Cochlear® Baha® supplied by Cochlear™
  • Vibrant Soundbridge® supplied by MedEL™
  • Bonebridge® supplied by MedEL™
  • Ponto® supplied by Oticon Medical™
  • Symphono® supplied by Medtronic™

All of these implantable devices are available at the PCIU. Please contact the PCIU for more information on these devices.
